Badin Rural Development Society on Friday staged protest demonstration in front of the office of British Petroleum (BP) for ignoring the locals in recruitment and not spending enough amount on the development schemes in the area.

A spokesperson of the company, Omayma Khan while talking to Business Recorder denied the allegations, saying that it was disinformation and British Petroleum was fulfilling all the legal obligations it had agreed to in the contract with the Government of Pakistan.

"We prefer the locals in recruitment and train them for our operations in the area", said manager communication and external affairs of BP, adding that the company was operating for the last 25 years and carried out a lot of development work in the area.

About the royalty, she said that it was a matter between the federal and provincial government and was not our concern.

The protestors who were carrying placards and chanting slogans against the administration of the oil and gas exploring company threatened to stop operations in Badin if their demands were not met.

"British Petroleum (BP) oil fields in Badin produces 62 percent oil and 44 percent gas of the total production of the country," the protestor claimed.

They also demanded of the Company to stop giving money to the central government, as it had not spent the money (royalty) on the welfare of the district.

The company should pay outstanding amount of Rs 11 billion either to the Sindh government or the local government to address the grievances of poverty-stricken residents of the area, the protestors added.
